Gardening:
It's different down here

It’s not your imagination. Gardening in Florida really is different from gardening in other parts of the country. That’s why Florida gardeners need a magazine all their own.

Here are a few tips:

Cherry tomatoes are the best tomatoes to grow in Floida. Large types fruit poorly when nighttime temperatures go above 68 degrees.

Ornamental gingers add color to gardens even during the hottest weather. They make spectacular long-lasting cut flowers, too.

Mulching keeps weeds down and soil moist, and helps feed plants. But its most important job in our hot Florida climate is to keep the plant roots cool. So pile it on thick!

Onions are sensitive to day length. Only short-day varieties grow to size in Florida

African irises add interest to any coastal garden. Not only beautiful, they are also salt tolerant.

Florida’s Exotic Fruits

Mango

Florida is one of the few places in the country where you can grow tropical and subtropical fruits. In fact, there are “rare fruit” clubs in many areas that offer information, plants, and even an opportunity to taste these exotic wonders. Every issue of Florida Gardening tells you what fruits are maturing at that time of year. You are probably familiar with our wonderful citrus fruits, but here’s a list of some other fruits that Florida gardeners can grow.
